Just curious, how is the alpha testing coming along? Haven't seen any updates about it.

Yes, it does. Carl shared a new alpha build with the group of testers yesterday. It is not close to beta testing yet, but it is progressing.

The code runs much faster than LB4, we have just had SQLite functionality added and it is looking pretty fantastic. Time served bugs in LB4 are falling by the wayside. But, a ways to go, Carl is working hard and I mean hard! There is a quite a lot still to do. I am not surprised since LB4 has been ten or more years in development and this is a complete rewrite.

Thank you Alyce and Rod for the information. Sounds like LB5 will be a winner smiley. Now I will go back and patiently wait for the beta to come out.

Is anyone gonna post up a screen shot of the editor? or provide information on the compiled exe or provide a sample exe for use to try out? I'm not sure how many Alpha testers there are, but I'm interested in seeing some samples please!

There's a long way to go, Ben. We cannot make executables yet. Many things are not yet implemented, like sprites and API calls.

I can tell you that there are some neat, new widgets and there is native database support, similar to what you see in Run BASIC.

The editor looks identical to the current editor, but it has a tabbed interface that allows you to have multiple files open at once.

Ok Alyce, thanks for the update.

Since LB5 is not yet released, it is up to Carl to post such information.

Screen shots of the editor have been posted already at Linux screenshots, LB5 for Mac screenshot and Liberty BASIC 5 current screenshot.

There was not much of a visual change just more menus and tool bar buttons.

Keep in mind that Carl had to totally rewrite the GUI portion due to the tools vendor changing the GUI framework.

Does anybody have any idea at all How far away we might be from an alpha build being available. My work is seasonal and it is starting to slow down . I would love to start playing with a new build.

Carl has stated that he has enough alpha testers. Alpha versions will not be widely available.

As I stated in an earlier reply, many things are not yet implemented. We are still finding bugs in the current alpha, along with compatibiity issues with LB4. It will be quite a while yet before a beta test cycle begins.

I'm sure there will be posts and announcements when alpha testing is wrapping up, but for now there is no point to asking for a timeline. Sorry. We just cannot predict it.

We are still in alpha testing. Once we begin beta testing the releases will be publicly available to try.

When this much was completed in 2006, why it took sooo long? OMG, Mayan calendar is about to end

The reason for the delay is pretty well discussed in older threads. The development tool that Carl uses stopped GUI support and Carl has had to build "widgets" for all the GUI controls we know and love, texteditor, graphicbox etc etc. So it is as far from the position he was at in 2006 as you could get.

I am privileged to be alpha testing, it looks great it has a lot of new functionality to.

That said my everyday enjoyment is Liberty BASIC 4.04, which there is little wrong with and any time any reader spends on it will be time well spent and a great grounding for 5.

We got sidelined because our tools vendor dragged their heels on the GUI framework we were using, and then they cancelled the project.

So we decided to develop Run BASIC http://www.runbasic.com while we waited for them. Last summer we restarted the LB5 effort and needed to port the GUI over to a different library, which was really hard to do as it turns out. But, we're in alpha testing now at last and I hope we'll be in public beta testing Q1 2013.

So, if the end of the world comes in the meanwhile I guess there will be more important things to be concerned about. wink
