We got sidelined because our tools vendor dragged their heels on the GUI framework we were using, and then they cancelled the project.

So we decided to develop Run BASIC http://www.runbasic.com while we waited for them. Last summer we restarted the LB5 effort and needed to port the GUI over to a different library, which was really hard to do as it turns out. But, we're in alpha testing now at last and I hope we'll be in public beta testing Q1 2013.

So, if the end of the world comes in the meanwhile I guess there will be more important things to be concerned about. wink

ah ^.^

tools vendors? Weren't you using public free/open source libraries for LB 5?

And would LB 5 be a improved Virtual Machine or it would compile code via translating it to assembly first?

Free tools? No, it has never been that way. Geek, you joined our forum in March 2012.

On this LB5 board, you can find this post from July 1, 2011. VisualWorks is pricey.

Yes, I've started working on porting to the currently supported VisualWorks GUI framework. The reason that LB5 stalled in the first place was that there were problems with the new VisualWorks GUI framework, but then to make it worse they cancelled the new framework which left us completely stranded. So, now I've finally decided to pick up the pieces and forge on. This forces me to rewrite the editor, debugger and graphics support code. After that it's all gravy.

LB5 will be cross-platform. It will not be translated to assembly language. You can read about VisualWorks here:

I can tell you that there are some neat, new widgets and there is native database support, similar to what you see in Run BASIC.

Alyce,

Have you seen a grid widget in LB5 yet?

Yes, it is functional but I worry you expect Excel in a box, that will never happen.

How soon can Liberty Basic ver.5 out yet? Where can I find the link? I have already purchased the license for the ver. 4.04 some years ago, would I be qualified for the upgrade?

I have said this many times, worry not about when Liberty BASIC v5.0 will be delivered and worry more about what you don't know about Liberty BASIC v4.04.

Liberty BASIC v4.04 is more than capable of delivering all of your needs, ask if you are failing and competent folks will offer solutions.

Liberty BASIC v5.0 will come but there is too much mystic and mystery associated with it.

It is designed to be cross platform, that was the original goal. do you operate cross platform? No, you either use Windows or Wine and Liberty performs on both. Cross platform may introduce restrictions so why do you pine for compromise?

So stop fretting about 5 and start to enjoy 4. I promise the time and effort will not be wasted.

Now I have a thick skin so tell me what I have got wrong and why we need 5. Be prepared to defend your proposal.

sounds like every one is having fun with the alpha testing and things are well on the right track which is good news.

And I hope it is everything Carl wants it to be, I can't wait till the beta comes out to see it in action that will be great smiley).

But until then i will just check here for updates and news from the current alpha testers.

have fun and have a great day

My users, do they operate cross platform? No.

No, we were discussing Liberty BASIC v4.04 capability. Liberty BASIC v5.0 is intended to be cross platform.

1) Completion date is uncertain as of now

2) There will be a high degree of compatibility between LB4 and LB5. While we can't guarantee that all code will run, the majority of it will without modification.

3) The upgrade cost for previous major version upgrades has been ~20 USD.
