Hi All,

We just finished, Thanks to ALL of Ya'll's help, "Daves Trails".
We put a stripped copy of it on GameJolt.com.
It is listed in the FREEWARE....Puzzle section.
It's obviously nothing fancy, but it will give you an idea of what Liberty Basic can do.

Hope this is the appropriate place to post this. If it isn't........PLEASE just delete it and let us know where.

Thanks Again for All of Ya'll's help.
(Especially Janet and Alyce, who took the time and held us by the hand to steer us in the right direction)

God Luv Ya's!

It's a variation on the pipe puzzle genre. Instead of the pipe pieces remaining in place and rotating to the correct connection orientation, the pipes are moved to different squares. Later levels do add the complexity of using multi colored pipes, and only like colors can be connected. I haven't played long enough to know if later levels do rotate the pipes.

The download is > 80mb. There are a couple of things you can do to decrease the download size.

Use .jpg backgrounds rather than .bmp backgrounds. You can use a third party dll such as the free one provided by Alyce to load the jpg or you can load using Dan's GDIPlus method. Either way, once the images are loaded, all of LB's native graphic commands will work.
That would free up a lot of disk space.

wav files also take up a lot of disk space. Try using a free converter, such as Switch Free Audio Converter and saving the sound effects in mp3 format. Then use mci dll to load and play. That will some disk space as well. Midi files would also work and can be played using native LB code.

Having said that, I think the program is really neat. It's a very nice example of what can be done with Liberty BASIC. And it's getting great reviews. You must be SO excited! grin

I'm interested in knowing if there were any API/DLL calls at all in the program or is all the code strictly native LB.

I'm downloading it, I will do my review later. As Janet says it's a big file, so it will take some time to download.

Direct link to your game:daves trails
You said that this is a "stripped copy", is there another version?
Congratulations for completing your game.

Edit: I could not download it, the file is too big and my connection is not good enough. Sorry.

We didn't use any API or DLL calls. It is Entirely LB code. We also didn't want to include any outside apps. We just wanted to see what we could do within LB without copying anyone's code.
It was origionally written just for fun. We just wanted to see what we could come up with without altering or using parts of someone else's work.
Oh, and yes we did think about tile rotation. And we also played with having the tile visible while you would drag it, etc. But in the end.............smiley
Then, once we had a working copy, friends and family actually enjoyed it!
They would all try to see if they could out do each other in getting to the end.

smiley >>No need to go into the boring details of why but, Let's just say a Grandson talked us into rewritting some of the code and posting a smaller version on a web site.
(Hee, hee....friends and family became our beta testers)

With that said, we thought about copy protection, hiding files, zipping & unzipping in a temp location, etc. etc.
But in the end we decided to just label all of the files clearly and put them in one folder. That way people can change the music files to their own liking. Or they can redesign the tiles to customize it for themselves, etc.

We were shocked and amazed at how the little game has taken off!!

But to be totally honest, the most fun came from:
The coding.
The road trips to get the background pictures.
The scraping of bricks together etc. to create sound files.
The most fun came from the project....period.
It was a Long Journey.

Now....If Grandson number one is correct, the little game may help with our ridiculous fixed income. Like he told us: "If you only get a dollar donation for your game, it is a dollar off of your electric bill". God Luv him [:-D}

smiley >>>>The actual game that was origionally copied and spread around on disk is almost 300 MB !!
If Janet were here she'd be scolding us wink
But, truth be told, if it wasn't for the Wonderful and Instructional help of people like Janet and others on this site, this little project wouldn't have been a project in the first place.

By the way Cundo,
Write us at: MillerWorldInc@aol.com and we'll see what we can do to help you with the large download.

Thanks Again Ya'll,
Dave & Jill

Thanks again to Janet's excellent help, we've managed to reduce Daves Trails
from 80mb to 37mb.
The smaller size seems to have helped because Daves Trails
is now spreading around the world.

Thanks Again to all that helped.
God Luv Ya's!
