It will not be released for months. Alpha testing began this week. For updates on the status, see the Liberty BASIC 5 board on this forum:

Why LB is taking so long? I really don't know any practical reason behind it...

Flotil had a question pertinent to this thread. Your question should be asked on the LB5 board. Please stay on topic to this thread, folks. I've had to remove off-topic messages in this thread.

Read Carl's messages on the LB5 board that were posted over the past six months. He explains the difficulty of creating the GUI widgets to allow for true cross-platform capability.

Further posts that are NOT pertinent to the subject of purchasing 4.04 and receiving an upgrade to LB5 will be removed without notice. Please stay on topic.

Is there a (final) draft of the LB5 help document available?

No, this won't be available until after alpha testing has finished I think, but I don't know the road-map of Carl.

You can get a sneak peak of how things might work if you download and install the free edition of Run BASIC.

You can find all public information about LB5 on the LB5 board below.

Hi,

I realize that you're eager for LB5 smiley and I'm sorry for the long wait. sad

LB5 is a completely new version of LB from scratch, so its code isn't based on LB4. It has been much more work than I expected it to be but I haven't stopped working on it, and in fact we started alpha testing a few weeks ago and things are moving along.

Also, I haven't been able to make it my primary focus in this economy so things have been slower than we would all like, but still the project continues.

Hang in there...

My LB4.04 is productive and working just fine.
When a new version is available I will upgrade.
We do what we can; you have my lifelong support.
Thanks for a great product.

There have been several alpha releases now. When beta testing begins (we're not quite there yet) it will be publicly available.

Does that include upgrading to the Pro version? So, If I go from 4.04 Gold to 4.04 Pro - would I get a free upgrade from 4.04 Pro to LB5 Pro? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Space Xscape

Carl I am sure all of us like me being lifelong users of Windows, that have tried to fathom out some of the mysteries of Linux have every sympathy for you in your struggle to create a Linux version of LB.

With my very limited knowledge, to judge by the problems I have had in trying to use some 6 versions of Linux, install new software, or use such as Wine to test LB exe files, I would not be at all surprised if it takes some time to release LB 5.

The Linux and Mac part is not the problem for the delay, but the need to rewrite big portions of LB from scratch due to necessary changes in the development tool.

The old development tool is really ancient and the new one includes different modules, so the code can't be ported.

The change of the development tool resulted in a working file dialog, so the change is necessary.

Thanks Stefan.

I hope we do not come across what seems to be a common problem when trying to instal new software under Linux. I often find I am asked to also instal extra files, and even type in strange code in what is I believe the console.

Likese will LB5 run on all versions of Linus or only certain versions.

Linux asks for prerequisites to be installed, under Windows you are seldom asked, but things are just installed and you may end up with crap on your system.

Just because the installer doesn't ask for dependencies to be installed, it doesn't mean there are none.

You may try RB for Linux, which is just a simple ZIP archive and has been reported to work on many flavors of Linux.

In general there are just a hand full of "root" distributions, which all the rest of the Linux distributions are based on.

A nice graph about this can be found at the GNU/Linux distro timeline

A friend and I are have considerable success with getting much of my LB Freeware to work on Ubunto Linux and Wine Ver 1.2 And 1.3. But I have yet to fathom out how to safely get Ubunto to install Wine ver 1.4 let alone the beta 1.5. My pal may perhaps succeed in due course with ver 1.4 and 1.5. So like many others here I am sure, I thank Carl for all his struggles in creating a free version 5 of LB to produce Linux compatible software, and look forward to testing such when available.

But with my limited knowledge of the various Linux even after trying Suse, Ubunto, Puppy and Parti Magic, I am curious about this. Is it intended that LB ver 5 will only code and create software while working under a Linux, or will it still work under Windows, be able to test the code under Windows, and then produce software for Linux?

Thanks Gordon S
