xx Liberty BASIC newsletter link - gone?
« Thread started on: Oct 3rd, 2011, 05:31am »

I think there used to be a link to Liberty BASIC Newsletter online.
I do not see it now, had to use Google to get to
The Liberty Basic Newsletter Online

There are LB NEWSLETTER ARCHIVES at LBPE, but it misses "online" part - to read, one must download and uncompress ZIP file (or I missed something).

If link really is gone, than it should be added somewhere.
This forum ( Feedback for the LB Programmer's Encyclopedia and Newsletters ) looks appropriate to have stikied topic pointing to Newsletters.

It was removed intentionally.

The site is maintained by an individual. He cannot promise to continue hosting the site indefinitely and it could go offline any time.

The newsletters are very outdated. We've made a big effort to update all of the best articles and place them on the LBPE where they can remain indefinitely and can be updated and corrected as needed.

We've grown tired of trying to correct errors in code posted by people who are following newsletter articles that were published many years ago.

If there is an article from the newsletters that you'd like to see on LBPE in an expanded/updated/corrected form, post a request here. We'll get to it as soon as possible.

Thanks.

Alyce,
I understand your point, but something has to be done.
As for now, this forum titled "Feedback for the LB Programmer's Encyclopedia and Newsletters", but newsletters nowhere to be seen.
I do not see clear link from LBPE front page even for "LB NEWSLETTER ARCHIVES at LBPE" page, as well.
It is too valuable to stay not linked.
May be they are outdated, but it still very useful (and yes, I was looking for NL 130 article "Chat Window Prototype - By Alyce Watson", to recommend it JB user, because it is well written, fully explained and to the point, IMHO).

I suggest making two links - one from this forum to "LB NEWSLETTER ARCHIVES at LBPE", another from LBPE front page (to same place).
As for being outdated and possibly having errors - well, there is red text on that page:
Quote:
Important: Before using any code from old newsletters, first check to see if an updated version exists here on the Liberty BASIC Programmer's Encyclopedia. There is a "search" box in the navigation pane that makes this easy. Be especially careful that all handles are passed as type "ulong" in API calls.

If you feel there is a need for more caveats/warnings, just add them there.

Anatoly, thank you for your reasoned opinion.

The staff discussed this at length before arriving at this decision. In fact, I wanted to do this a long time ago, but some staff members objected. We are now all in agreement.

To put links to the newsletter at LBPE would defeat the purpose. LBPE replaces the newsletter. We want to avoid links and references to the old newsletters, not highlight them.

If you'd like the chat window article to be added to LBPE, we can do that. wink Thanks very much for the kind words.

I hope everybody understands and agrees that a dynamic wiki is much more useful than immutable articles that are outdated and sometimes incorrect.

Thanks for your patience. smiley

Despite from being useful the newsletters do have a huge problem, which is being outdated.

The red paragraph is never read by users, since they never see it, when they enter the site through a search or a direct link to an article.

Both links have been removed, the one on the forums main page and the one on the navigation of the wiki for that reason.

In addition 75% or more of the example code does not work without a rewrite due to using 16-bit API functions or handles not as uLong.

It is getting really frustrating, that people ask the same questions over and over again for the same piece of outdated code, without even trying to search for the ten or more solutions already posted to correct it.

Porting the whole thing is nearly impossible, so it is better to do it on demand or if a question is pestering us, which is covered by an old article.

I do not see any disadvantage in having to download the entire newsletter in a ZIP, since some people even prefer to read things offline or printed on paper.
In addition it will include all needed files for each article.

It was decided to remove both links and to look forward, keeping the newsletter in mind as a resource for future Wiki articles.

That's a great explanation, Stefan.

Anatoly, here is a new link to share with your friend:

http://lbpe.wikispaces.com/ChatWindow

Do let us know if there are other useful articles that should be transferred. I evaluated the old articles and moved/updated quite a few of them over the past year.

The newsletters can still be found by a web search or through the search on the wiki page.

For instance, if you search for speech liberty basic through Google, the sixth entry is the contents list at the wiki and the eighth entry is the online newsletter.

Searching for speech at the wiki will return mostly newsletters.

Yes, that is true, but we hope that people will refer to the articles at LBPE. If a pertinent article does not exist, feel free to request it.

Also, if you have something to share, please do. Demo programs, snippets, etc. can be shared easily at the community wiki. You'll need to be a member to add or edit pages at the community wiki, but membership is free and easy.

Full tutorials and articles that carefully and thoroughly explain code and coding principles can be placed at LBPE. LBPE does not require membership. The public is encouraged to contribute articles.

An aside to Anatoly: did you notice that the chat window article was immediately added to LBPE? Are there other articles that should be moved?

Yes I did. Thank you. And I promptly changed link to LBPE version, just for a case ("it could go offline any time").
