xx error message stops me downloading LB
« Thread started on: Feb 11th, 2017, 4:35pm »

Smalltalk/v Unable to allocate virtual address space error message!!

I had to change my PC. When I got my new one (Windows 10), I attempted to download Liberty BASIC, using what I think was an old installer viz lb404setup which did get copied onto my new machine. I think, but am not sure that this was the cause of my new PC crashing in a big way. My computer vendor fixed it and used lb450setup to download Liberty Basic again. Well we downloaded Liberty basic from the LB website that is!

Alas, when I tried to run LB from the desktop icon, all I got was the error message above i.e.

Smalltalk/v Unable to allocate virtual address space error message.

I cannot run Liberty Basic at all now the error persists and so I cannot even open the IDE - all I get is this error message. I looked it up in the internet and found this:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa366912(v=vs.85).aspx

but this means nothing to me and so is of no help. Can anyone please advise me on what to do.?

This is a known problem. First of all try and tidy up your new pc. Let Windows do its thing for a day or two. Check that all the programs that load at startup are really needed.

Your new pc is loafing programs that are grabbing adddtess spaces and are leaving none for Liberty. Do you use all these programs?

The ultimate solution is to step back to the previous version of Liberty which does not demand such a large memory pool. But try uninstalling programs you will never use.

You should be fine with v4.04.

V4.50 requires a continuous space on memory, when it's available. If you are low on RAM then no problem.
It could run, if you do what Rod says. Do you have many programs starting at boot-up?

As far as I know, only anti virus. and windows 10 of course. There are icons to loads of stuff but they are not running on start up.

You can still get Liberty BASIC v4.04 here

http://www.libertybasic.com/lb404setup.exe

But don't give up yet. Click on the Windows icon then type startup into the search box, click search and then click on the option to see what programs Windows starts at startup.

If there is software getting loaded that you will never use then disable it. Uninstall any other software you don't need, using Windows Control panel.

Reboot and try to run Liberty 4.5 again.

If this is a new PC with little software loaded I would then suspect your anti virus is preventing programs grabbing relatively large amounts of contiguous memory.

I use the standard anti virus that is integrated within Windows 10, it works well for me but you must decide if all this effort is worth it or whether 4.04 will suffice.

That's strange When I try to enter my registration code it won't allow me to register - I'm using my code for LB v4.03 Any ideas? Do I have to pay again? huh
